It was opened on 10.12.1977. The 776 m-high ice track, the Winterberg “Kappe”, is among the fastest in the world. Here, safety is paramount. In 1986, the Hochsauerlandkreis local authority and the town of Winterberg moved the finish run and brought the facility up to the highest technical standards. Thanks to the large cooling aggregates, the track could even be iced during the summer. At higher temperatures, cold ammoniac is pumped through 62 km-long pipelines - as with a refrigerator.
On the track, a fast pace is made possible by the famous “roundabout” and the “omega bend” with top speeds of up to 150km/h. Every year, international bob-sleigh, toboggan and skeleton championships are held on the 1,606 m-long ice track.
In 2015, the bob-sleigh track hosted the FIBT Bob & Skeleton world championships.
