Koepchen-Pumpspeicherwerk

Industrial culture at its best

Beschreibung

The "Koepchen-Werk", named after its designer, was visionary at the time of its construction (1927-1930), since it was a clever way of storing energy: 160 m above the power station on the slope of the Ardey Mountains lies the storage basin, which drives the turbines of the power station on Lake Hengstey during peak demand periods and refills the basin by pumping it up again during times of low electricity demand. In 1994, after an ultra-modern power station had been built right next door, the old plant, which was listed as a historical monument, was shut down and opened to the general public - but only on request.
