Burg Blankenstein - einst Krone des Märkischen Landes

Blankenstein Castle in Hattingen-Blankenstein was one of the four main castles of the Counts of Mark.

Description

It was once called the crown of Märkisches Land. It was particularly important for the city of Bochum: In 1321, Count Engelbert von der Mark granted the town its rights.

Today, the castle gate, the fortified tower and parts of the Marstall are still preserved among the ruins. Today Blankenstein Castle is enthroned high above the Ruhr river as it had once been. From the fortified tower, you have an extraordinary view of the Ruhr Valley and Lake Kemnader. In the castle itself there is a restaurant with a beautiful beer garden. Celebrations, knights' feasts and parties often take place here.

The historic town centre of Blankenstein, the new town museum and the neighbouring Gethmann Garden - designed in Romantic style - are also worth an extensive stroll.
